Smith had been battling cancer in recent years, but even as of a few months ago was still active in the community as a coach. Cecil Hurt has a nice column looking back at his time in Alabama:
"I was blessed with two big offensive coordinators, Mal Moore and Homer Smith," former quarterback Jay Barker said on Sunday. "But it was coach Smith which really opened my eyes to the possibilities in the game of step." Earlier, he had coaches that tell you something and maybe give it a test. But head coach Smith would stop at the meeting and actually teach. He would go through the comprehensive guide. Sometimes it would face an hour-and-half board, but his theory was, if you can teach it, i.e., that he knew. "And because, when it was in the field, easily."
Smith's crimes accumulate record numbers in 1988 and 1989 with David Smith and Hollingsworth to field marshal. His return to staff of Gene Stallings was more limited success, as some of his ideas were at odds with the approach more conservative of Stallings. Even so, he had Barker breaking records and what makes New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist and winning one of the most memorable games in the history of Alabama, a classic of 29-28 on Georgia.
Although Smith only spent a few years in Alabama, the most offensive coordinator of Alabama is possibly in the era post-Bryant, and their crimes were generally as productive imaginative. His offense was very much the driving force behind the two recent Bill Curry combined teams to win 19 games, and the offensive of 1989 is possibly one of the best in the history of the school. His return to Tuscaloosa in 1994 to form the so-called Dream Team as a personal coach Gene Stallings and Bill Oliver did not go as planned, but yet still transformed Jay Barker pedestrian player to come from a major injury to a contender for the Heisman Trophy in good faith, and remained a fan favorite.
Beyond of their successes in the field, however, most impressive for Smith may have been its achievements in the classroom. Smith was a Manager by trade, but that did not prevent him from winning a title at Princeton economics, an MBA from Stanford, a Ph.d. in theology at Harvard. It is not surprising given that backdrop, was held in high regard by their peers in football as one of the most innovative offensive of its day. Everything is a sad day for college football, as we lose one of the best coaches and the majority of individuals only.

While stocks of Marcell Dareus and Julio Jones project has increased considerably in recent months, not can say is that of Mark Ingram. While solid, though not spectacular, placed numbers in the combination of the NFL and the Alabama Pro day, has been a bit of a question mark over the past few weeks. And now, the concerns of injury are apparently becoming an important issue. Mention of Football Pro:
But there have been rumors that the stability in the long term of the knee of Ingram is tenuous. And Mike Lombardi NFL Network reported something that can justify that speculation on the way the draft Wednesday night.
"I've had two teams tell me is very bad, the knee", said Lombardi. "It won't be in their boards of Directors". "These are teams that need running backs".
"I think that it could lead to that enter you (draft)", said on March 31. Lombardi suggested that Ingram may have degenerative arthritis, a condition that has been linked to Da'Quan Bowers and will likely cause of Clemson defensive end in week of project, as well.
As Maurice Clarett could tell you, only needs a team to love as a player, even if the 31 teams are not playing him, but it is true that it's some shocking news for Ingram. That's not to say do not develop, of course, but this is a development which does not want to see. Any time that a team someone removes your Board's project that seems to be the best player available in a situation of need, you probably have a long look at the importance of the underlying concern. We know Ingram had the injury in the knee in fall camp last year, and is true that probably never 100% thereafter. If it was an injury at once or if there is a degenerative condition that affects his knee is to debate, but for now, seems reasonable minds NFL differ on this issue.
For obvious reasons, hope that Ingram did not fall much, but this is probably one to keep his eye on the future. Given the fungible and typically brief nature tailbacks of NFL career, many teams probably will be willing to make a very high tailback in the first place, and concerns of injury could easily scare away a handful of teams want to run the risk of a not proven player to pay a huge sum of money. Let us hope that it works well for Ingram, but for now it seems that you can expect a time to hear his name in New York.
