2010 College Football Predictions - LSU

Les Miles is 51-15 with a national title under his belt in five seasons at LSU, but the school is far from satisfied. LSU is not at all happy about playing second fiddle to Alabama in the SEC West, especially since former LSU coach Nick Saban is the reason for Bama's re-emergence. Since winning a national title in the 2007 season, LSU has had no answer for Alabama, Florida or Ole Miss. In fact, the Tigers are 0-6 against these three schools the last two years. With Auburn and Arkansas also on the rise, 2010 is a critical season for Miles to show the school that he's capable of getting back to the top of the mountain.

Offense: LSU's offense was atrocious in 2009. The Tigers ranked dead last in the SEC, and 112th nationally, in total offense, averaging just 304.5 yards per game. In case you don't know, there are only 120 FBS teams in the country. From a scoring standpoint, the Tigers ranked No. 10 in the SEC, averaging just 24.9 points per game. Every good offense starts with a good offensive line, and that was something the Tigers did not have in 2009. LSU ranked No. 11 in the league in rushing offense, averaging 122.8 rushing yards per game, and No. 9 in passing offense, averaging 181.8 passing yards per game. This unit also allowed 34 quarterback sacks. With three starters returning up front there is reason to believe the line will be better, but I don't think it will be like night and day. Quarterback Jordan Jefferson is coming off a solid season, throwing for 2,166 yards and 17 scores with only seven picks. I can only imagine what he could do with a little more time. His primary target is Terrance Toliver, who caught 53 passes for 735 yards and three scored in 2009. Inside runner, Stevan Ridley, and the speedy Michael Ford figure to get most of the carries.

Defense: It's safe to say LSU wouldn't have won a lot of games last season if it wasn't for the defense. The Tigers boasted the 11th-best scoring defense in the country in 2009, only giving up 16.2 points per contest. While LSU does lose seven starters, it isn't expected to take a step back. Middle linebacker Kevin Sheppard and cornerback Patrick Peterson lead the defense. Sheppard returns for his senior season after leading LSU with 110 tackles. Peterson is a shutdown corner who will be playing on Sunday's soon enough. LSU's defense could have been even better a season ago if it had been able to get more heat on opposing quarterbacks. In fact, the Tigers only tallied 21 sacks last season. Defensive coordinator John Chavis expects to do much better in the pass rush department with the additions of Sam Montgomery, Barkevious Mingo and Ken Adams up front.

Prediction: 4th SEC West - The Tigers are a year away from having the level of talent and experience to challenge for a league title and more. Still, it would be nice to build some momentum with a strong campaign in 2010. But that might be difficult to do with a challenging schedule, and with the way Auburn and Arkansas have gotten back on the map. 2010 College Football Predictions - Arkansas

Arkansas is one of the more popular darkhorse picks to win this season's national title because of all the offensive fire power it brings back. But if you're a believer in defense winning championships, you may not be so quick to make Arkansas your sleeper.

Led by quarterback Ryan Mallett, the Razorbacks boasted the No. 1 scoring offense in the SEC last season. However, the defense ranked No. 12 in the SEC in total defense, giving up 401.2 yards per game. The offense will once again be tough to tame, but a defense that has ranked dead last in the SEC the last two years could keep the Razorbacks from a claiming an SEC West title.

Offense: Mallett led the No. 1 passing attack in the SEC last season, one that averaged 295.5 yards per game through the air. With one of the best wide receiver units in the country returning, Arkansas will be ready to air it out again in 2010. Head coach Bobby Petrino wants to be a little more balanced this season. Running the ball more will eat clock, which will help keep his weaker defense off the field. Mallett threw for 3,624 yards and 30 touchdown strikes with just seven picks in 2009. Returning wide receivers Greg Childs, Joe Adams, Jarius Wright and Cobi Hamilton combined for 2,490 of those yards and 22 of those touchdowns. Childs is the top returning receiver. He caught 48 passes for 894 yards and seven scores a season ago. The Razorbacks lost running back Michael Smith, but Ronnie Wingo Jr., Dennis Johnson, Broderick Green and Knile Davis are all talented backs. They will also benefit from an experienced offensive line which returns four starters.

Defense: If Arkansas is going to win the West, it's going to need improved play from a defense that allowed 25.1 points per game last year. The Hogs must especially improve their pass defense. They finished last in the SEC in defending the pass, allowing 248.5 yards per game last season. While the Razorbacks' gambling defense finished No. 2 nationally in turnover margin, it gave up way too many big plays in the process. I have no doubt that this unit will be better this season, but it's hard to think it will be drastically better. With guys like Jake Bequette, Patrick Jones, Zach Stadther and Tenarius Wright back up front, the Hogs should continue to improve against the run. But the true key to their success will be how well they defend the pass. Key personnel returns in the secondary, but the Razorbacks must be able to mount a better pass rush in order to keep teams from picking them apart through the air.

Prediction: 2nd SEC West - I won't be at all surprised if Arkansas finds a way to win the West, but I'm giving the early edge to defending national champion Alabama. Bama may have lost a lot of key players on defense, but coach Nick Saban has proven that he can reload. 2010 College Football Predictions - Alabama

Winning consecutive BCS titles will be no easy task for the Alabama Crimson Tide, but it is not out of the question when you consider head coach Nick Saban's track record. Under Saban, the Tide are 26-2 the last two seasons, including a perfect 24-0 during the regular season. Saban prides himself on putting together teams that play dominating defense and that take care of the football on offense. Despite a pretty conservative playbook, Alabama still averaged 32.1 points per game in 2009 (22nd nationally), and that number should go up this season. Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram is back, along with star wide receiver Julio Jones and exceptional game-managing quarterback Greg McElroy. After losing so many starters, we may not see the same defense that ranked No. 2 nationally in points allowed and yards allowed last season, but the caliber of Saban's recruiting classes suggest that we will still see a very respectable unit. The experience level may be down, but the talent level is up.

Offense - Ingram returns to lead the offense after rushing for 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns a season ago, and defenses will get no chance to catch their breath when game-breaking backup Trent Richardson spells him. Because defenses will have to respect this duo so much, it should really open things up for McElroy through the air. McElroy threw for 2,508 yards and 17 scores with only four interceptions in 2009. Four of those touchdown passes went to the deep threat Jones, who should be poised for a big season after battling injuries last year. When teams stack the box, McElroy has the savvy to audible to passing plays. I also expect the Tide to be dangerous in the play-action game because of how much attention opposing defense will pay to the running game.

Defense - Safety Mark Barron, middle linebacker Dont'a Hightower and defensive end Marcell Dareus are the leaders of their respective defensive units. Barron makes plays all over the field. He is the team's top returning tackler (76), and he also picked off seven passes a season ago. Hightower suffered a season-ending injury against Arkansas, but he has made a full recovery. He should be the heart and soul of the defense the way Rolando McClain was last season. Dareus was the defensive MVP of Alabama's BCS championship game victory over Texas. He came up with 6.5 sacks last season, and that number should rise in 2010.

Prediction - 1st SEC West - Saban continues to bring in top notch talent, and that's why it is not out of the realm of possibility for his team to record its third straight perfect regular season. The offense should be better than it was a season ago, so if the defense can reload as expected I see no reason why Bama shouldn't win the West. College football season is back and football fans couldn't be more excited. The tradition of college football is special. It is even more important for fans of the SEC. The SEC has long been thought of as the conference to beat in college football. While the Big 12 is gaining on them, they should still be the top conference in the land, yet again. So what does the most powerful of power conferences have in store for them this year? Check out these Free College Football Picks and find out.

1. Florida Gators- Is it really any surprise that they're picked to win the conference again? Everybody and their brother is picking them to win the National Championship, so how could they not win the conference. Every single starter from an amazing defense last year is back. Oh and did I mention that Tim Tebow is back? His press conference to announce that he was coming back is the stuff of legends, by the way (as if he didn't already have a pretty substantial legend growing). While nothing is for sure in the crazy world of college football, they're pretty much a lock to win the SEC. Prediction: 12-0

2. Alabama Crimson Tide- Can Nick Saban deliver the magic yet again? He definitely has a knack for building college football powerhouses. What he did at LSU in the past is slowly coming to fruition in 'Bama. I think they will again win the West division in a close battle with LSU. Saban has done some awesome recruiting, but it might be a little much for the new guys to think they can unseat Florida as the conference champs. They did lose John Parker-Wilson at QB and Andre Smith to the first round of the draft. Losing Glen Coffee isn't going to help matters either. However, I think he's got enough horses in the stable to plug them in and keep going. Prediction 10-2.

3. Ole Miss Rebels- Houston Nutt inherited a pretty solid team when he bolted Arkansas for Mississippi. He's also added a few pieces here and there to make a pretty solid unit. They have a great quarterback coming back in Jevan Snead. He should be able to lead the offense to some good times in the SEC. Perhaps the best thing they have going for them is their schedule. They should roll through most of the season with only a bump or two in the road. Prediction: 10-2

4. LSU Tigers- The Tigers have been one of the most successful programs in college football in recent years. They're just two seasons removed from a National Championship. However, they're still kind of rebuilding in Baton Rouge. They are very talented and they'll win several games this year, but they're not upper echelon just yet. Prediction: 9-3

5. Georgia Bulldogs- The Bulldogs are always a tough team and this year will be no different. However, losing your quarterback to the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft isn't an easy thing to overcome. Then you add into that the fact that you lost your starting running-back to the 1st round of the draft as well. They lost a lot of studs last year and it's going to be a transition period this season for the Bulldogs. Prediction 9-3.

6. South Carolina Gamecocks- Can the "Old Ball Coach" pull off a miracle turnaround and unseat Florida as the conference champions? Probably not. They're going to be better than they have in recent years, but they're still not going to get over the hump. Expect them to be up and down this year behind sketchy quarterback Stephen Garcia. Prediction: 8-4

7. Vanderbilt- Vandy has always been thought of as a secondary program in the SEC. For a while, the only thing they had going for them was that they produced Jay Cutler (at one point, that was a good thing). Then last season came along and they surprised a lot of the pundits. They made their first bowl game in two decades and ended up winning it. It was a welcome surprise for a much maligned program in Vandy. Expect about the same record as last year. Prediction: 7-5

8. Arkansas Razorbacks- Arkansas hasn't really recovered since they lost two running backs to the first round of the draft and Houston Nutt left town. They've had a pretty miserable run lately and Bobby Petrino hopes that he can turn it around. Can he get the job done? He's trying to build everything around talented quarterback Ryan Mallett. He's a good quarterback, but the defense is a little flawed at this point. Expect some shootouts in Fayetteville this year. Prediction: 7-5

9. Auburn Tigers- Auburn just traded in one of the most successful coaches in the country for one of the most unsuccessful. Hope it works out for you Auburn! They will probably struggle through the season and have moments that make you scratch your head. They've been a football powerhouse in recent memory, but this season will not fit into that category. Prediction:6-6

10. Tennessee Volunteers- The big news of the off-season was all about Lane Kiffin coming to town. He got a very public firing at the hands of Raiders owner Al Davis and now he brings his brand of football (whatever that is) to Tennessee. He then proceeded to alienate several players and anger many people along the way. This will be a tough first year for Kiffin even if he has his daddy there to support him. Prediction: 6-6

11. Kentucky Wildcats- Gone are the days of Jared Lorenzen and Andre Woodson at quarterback. Here are the days of Mike Hartline under center. He won't break any passing records this year at Kentucky. They're going to be pretty bad this year and it might not get better for a few years. Expect a losing season in Kentucky. Prediction: 5-7

12. Mississippi St. Bulldogs- The Bulldogs are pretty much going to be terrible this year. In fact, they've been pretty bad for a while now. Don't expect any miracles in this section of Mississippi. Expect another depressing year for Bulldog fans. Prediction: 3-9

2008-2009 NCAA Football Final Top 10 Predictions

1. Ohio State - I'm an avid Michigan fan but have to admit returning 18 starters from a already solid 2 year run is pretty tough to beat. The talent at OSU is at or above every elite level program in the country for this season and this should finally be there year.

* Win it all If....They pass a early season test @ USC (9/13). This could very well be the first of two meetings between the Trojans and Buckeyes in '08-'09, However the loser of Game 1 is going to have to hope for a shaky Top 5 like this past year. Win or Lose for the Buckeyes they will still have a shot at the end of the season to be in the NC Game.

* Potential Roadblocks...@Wisconsin, @MSU, and @ Illinois, with all 3 of them improved this season, could be tough as well as the final game at home vs. Michigan.

2. Florida - A Rematch of the '06-'07 game ends the opposite way for the gators, allowing OSU to knock off some of that SEC Supiority. (However I strongly feel the SEC is the best conference in the Country but thats for a different day.) Tebow, Harvin, Moody, Gainey and Co. will have an explosive offensive year and a still youthful defense will cause fits throughout the year.

* Win it all if...Its Simple, Beat Miami (Fl), Tennesee, LSU, FSU, Georgia, and Arkansas.

* Potential Roadblocks...The Schedule, Tebow's durability. IMO this offense will not be stopped, but there could be potential lapses I suppose.

3. Georgia - Its very tough to pick against the Bulldogs this season, They return almost everyone, 15+ I believe, the schedule could be the downfall. Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno will dazzle once again. Massaquoi will finally become a star alongside AJ Green for the big play threats. The defense will be very fast and hard hitting, I love Coach Richt as well, he always has his teams ready. Some of the big time recruits will have great freshman seasons. Tyson, Harmon, and Jackson will all boost the D-Line.

* Win it all if...They beat Florida on Nov. 1st, IMO Winner of the SEC East will be a lock for the NC game, barring an upset in the SEC title game.

* Potential Roadblocks...@ASU,@LSU, and @ Auburn is tough to overcome, as well as Florida, 'Bama, and Tennessee at home.

4. Clemson- I will hear it for this pick I think, but I really like this Clemson team, with a very favorable schedule and game breakers such as CJ Spiller and James Davis. Bowers on the defensive side will have a large impact as well Spencer Adams (S) and Brandon Thompson (DT).

* Win it all if...They don't stumble. They should be good if they pass Game 1 vs. Alabama, that is, until the ACC title game. VT and possibly Miami could be the difference between BCS Champ Game or the Orange Bowl.

* Potential Roadblocks...Alabama, @ FSU, ACC Title game and a lack of focus or preparation for any other games, It's happened before which is a criticism of head coach Tommy Bowden.

5. USC - 5 is most likely too low for this extremely talented squad. QB Mark Sanchez (Or possibly Mitch Mustain) inherits more offensive weapons than one could dream of, the only problem is the amount of pressure that brings as well.

* Win it all if...They get solid play from their QB. Both are experinced and very talented, they need to be leaders not playmakers. OSU at home, typical Cal and Oregon tough games, and then the showdown with New-UCLA.

* Potential Roadblocks...Complete meltdowns from both QB's, Trap games vs. ASU Cal Oregon and Notre Dame. Very easily could be playing for the title though.

6. Oklahoma - A very scary team, 1 of about 8 teams with a legit title oppurtunity. Bradford and Co. will be huge again on offense, and Coach Stoops' Defenses never seem to fail. A lot of talent returning from last years youthful squad. The annual showdown with Texas is the biggest test, but Kansas, KSU, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Cincinnati all will pose as dangerous. And never count out Texas Tech either.

* Win it all if...They are consistent, they were all of last season until that dreadful Texas Tech game, A Dangerous Mizzou squad could await them in the Big 12 Title game.

* Potential Roadblocks...Not many, just learn from their mistakes last season. Play Stoops' ball and dont let up vs. Texas and any others.

7. Texas - Could flip with Oklahoma. One of the two will win the Big 12 South, a lethal defense will need to carry the load in the big games for them to have a chance in a very offensive Big 12 this season.

* Win it all if...They win the Big 12 Title, its do-able, but unlikely this year. McCoy will be huge though.

* Potential Roadblocks...Colorado, Oklahoma, Mizzou, Tech, Kansas, and Texas A&M, Big 12 Title game. Thats 7 very tough games. Easily could slip up.

8. WVU - They are for real, I did not think they were until the bowl game last season. This time will score many points, they just need to stay motivated and not get bitten by Pitt or any other "underdog." Bill Stewart will not let this program drop off. Pat White will have a Heisman Longshot, Noel Devine will be the real deal.

* Win it all if...They don't faulter. The midseason Auburn contest is huge for this team, but they played with the best of em last season vs. Oklahoma and showed they belong.

* Potential Roadblocks...Cincinnati will be a tough game again, The Bearcats will be better, Auburn as well, The Backyard Brawl is clearly always going to be interesting as well.

9. Missouri - They return a boatload of starters and Chase Daniel + Jeremy Maclin are the best 1-2 punch in the country on any given day. The defense will be able to win a game or two if needed, the potential downfall could be injuries, which we all hope never happens, but a lack of depth could hurt.

* Win it all if...They win the Big 12 Title, whoever comes out of the Big 12 could have a very serious NC game bid.

* Potential Roadblocks...Game 1 vs. Illinois in a rivlary game, Nebraska, Texas, Colorado, and Kansas.

10. Michigan - I have to do it. Im a big fan of the Wolverines and my optimism is really high at this moment. (Although I think 2010 is a real title shot). Rich Rod will have this team stronger, faster, and hungrier, as well as more potent. A lot of incoming speed and more playmakers in Ann Arbor. A young, Fast, and swarming defense is now in place as well.

* Win it all if...They won't but 10-2 is easily reachable, however that could quickly also be 6-6,7-5 type season as well.

* Potential Roadblocks...Notre Dame, Illinois, Wisconsin, MSU, OSU, and PSU all lurk.
